Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other, leading to a decline in cognitive function. The most common causes of dementia include Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia. Other causes of dementia can include head injury, stroke, infection, and certain metabolic and genetic disorders. In some cases, the cause of dementia is unknown.
