Memowrite Review
I signed my father up for Memowrite after a minor health scare last year. Nothing life-threatening, but it made our family realize how many stories and memories we'd never actually written down.
What I liked was that he didn't have to sit down and write a traditional memoir from scratch. The guided questions gave him something specific to talk about, and each answer seemed to trigger another memory. Some evenings he'd call me just to tell me a story that came back to him while working through the prompts.
The project ended up being about more than preserving family history. It gave him something meaningful to focus on, especially after retirement when a lot of his usual routines had slowed down. I noticed he seemed more engaged and excited when talking about his childhood, military service, early career, and how he met my mother.
When the finished book arrived, it was surprisingly emotional for the whole family. My kids learned things about their grandfather they had never heard before, and we now have those stories in one place instead of scattered across random conversations.
It's not the cheapest service out there, and it does take some commitment to complete, but for our family it was worth it. Looking back, I wish we had started capturing these memories even earlier. As our parents get older, those stories become a lot more valuable than we realize.
