Skin Health in Long term incontinence after stroke

Interested in ideas for skin health in long term stroke patients who are unable to get to the bathroom for urination. Tried zinc based products that nurses recommended but they are too drying.

  • I can no longer work and care for my loved one so he now has an aide. She uses Coloplast Triad Hydrophilic Wound Dressing for bed soars. She says this product works well. She was using Rasimine but said it stopped working. Sorry there is zinc in it.

  • If you apply barrier cream with a glove to the entire diaper area including genitalia and thighs, you can wear plastic briefs with wetness or solids.  I often lay in mess for hours and this is what happens in nursing homes.  Also apply a deoderant spray.

  • As a stroke survivor of 25 years. I've been through the mill on a lot of these issues. Having progressive MS and 2 strokes. At this point I'm quadriplegic and spend a lot of time in bed. I'm both complete bladder & bowel incontinent.  I need 24/7 care from home care aides and My husband.  Incontinence is tough on skin. The barrier creams ointments etc all help. But skin needs to breath. Most days at home if I'm just in bed. I lay on a incontinence pad.  And wear nothing.  Its best for My skin. I have not had any major rashs or sores in a long time. I only need to wear a diaper if I'm in My wheelchair and out of our home. Or through the night. The better quality briefs are also better for Your skin as the wick the urine away from the skin better. And changing as soon as possible after a bowel event.

I'm sorry about your issues.  I have them also.   I have no bowel or bladder control for 8 years.

I also cannot get an erection whihc is fine for when I'm changed at doctors office.  I am not sexually active and don't feel my penis at all.   I can walk now and It's not obvious I'm wearing - but after wetting and soiling i'm pretty big.  I used to get changed in bed - with wipes.  I need a change at night.  I walk over to shower and pull it down and shower soil off.  I apply cream with every single change to avoid rashes.

  • At this point I have no bladder or bowel control. For years. we used various forms of cathing for My bladder. And I mostly was able to maintain a bowel program. But eventually all the UTIs from cathing. And I eventually required a feeding tube. Which caused My bowels to operate in a constant state of mild diarrhea.  So for a couple years. I have needed to wear adult diapers.
