What is the difference between somatic tinnitus and hearing loss tinnitus ?

Somatic tinnitus and hearing loss-related tinnitus refer to different underlying causes of tinnitus, which is the perception of sound in the absence of any external sound source. Here's an overview of the two types:

  1. Somatic Tinnitus: This type of tinnitus is associated with sensory input from the body, such as muscle movements or changes in the position of the head and neck. Somatic tinnitus can be influenced or modulated by physical movements or pressure applied to certain areas of the body. It may be perceived as a rhythmic or pulsatile sound, often synchronized with the individual's heartbeat. The somatic component of this type of tinnitus can sometimes be localized to specific areas, such as the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) or neck muscles.

  2. Hearing Loss-Related Tinnitus: This type of tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss or damage to the auditory system. It is the most common form of tinnitus. When there is damage or impairment to the auditory system, such as damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, the brain may generate phantom sounds to compensate for the lack of auditory input. Hearing loss-related tinnitus can be continuous or intermittent and may vary in loudness and pitch. It is often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing, or roaring sound.

It's important to note that somatic tinnitus and hearing loss-related tinnitus are not mutually exclusive, and some individuals may experience both types simultaneously. The treatment approaches for tinnitus can vary depending on the underlying cause, and it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an audiologist or an ear, nose, and throat specialist, for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management.
