Caring for Elder Disabled Parent When You are Disabled Yourself

My mom has had MS for over 50 years. I have stage 4 COPD. My mom lives in assisted living, and I am responsible for taking care of her finances, being the liason with the AL facility, etc. etc. We are only 16 years apart in age, and she is 79.

As my own disease has progressed, I often find myself in a situation where I can either do for her, or do for myself. Not both. For three years I always put her needs first, and found myself in a serious health decline. In the past few months, I have had to quit my job and am basically homebound myself.

How do you manage to balance things in this situation? I have no one to help me with her other than the AL staff.

  • I'm inpatient right now, day 9. I have M.S. for many years. You must put yourself first. Period. Trust AL to be doing their job.

When I recovery more from my surgery I will go home and that scares the death out of me.
